The 2018 FNF Africa Freedom Speech and Award
The 2018 Freedom Speech will be given by Mmusi Maimane, the Leader of the South African Democratic Alliance (DA) on Thursday, 29 November 2018. Mmusi Maimane will also receive the 2018 African Freedom Award that will be handed to him by the President of Senegal His Excellency, President Macky Sall on Friday, 30 November 2018. The African Freedom Prize is awarded every year by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation to a distinguished personality that engages in favour of Freedom.
The Freedom Speech Gala Dinner will take place on the second evening of the 62nd Liberal International (LI) Congress that is taking place on 28-30 November in Dakar, Senegal. Liberals from across the world will meet in Dakar under the theme "Local Answers for Global Challenges". The 62nd LI Congress will also be a platform for delegates to vote for new leaders of the Liberal International Bureau. FNF Chairperson Dr Karl-Heinz Paqué will be standing for the position of Deputy President of Liberal International. Other contested positions are for: President, Deputy President, Vice President and Treasurer. The current Liberal International President Juli Minovez's term comes to an end and will be succeeded by Hakima El Haité from Morocco as the new Liberal International President.
The Freedom Speech and Award Ceremony will coincide with a Liberal International event for the second time in 2018. Last year the event coincided with the 199th Liberal International Executive Committee meeting in Johannesburg.
This is the third FNF Africa Freedom Speech and Award Ceremony. In 2016, South African radio and television personality Garath Cliff was the recipient of the inaugural Freedom Award Ceremony. In 2017, the Freedom Speech was delivered by Ismail Jussa, a member of the House of Representatives for Stone Town (Zanzibar) and Director of Foreign Affairs of the Civic United Front. The Freedom Award was awarded to President of the United Party for National Development in Zambia Hakainde Hichilema.
